Otter.ai alternative: how LessRec compares ($0.05/min vs $20/mo)
If you're transcribing a few hours of audio per month, Otter's $20/mo Pro plan probably costs you more than your actual usage. Here's an honest comparison between Otter.ai and LessRec — same Whisper engine under the hood, very different pricing model.
TL;DR
| Plan | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Otter Free | $0/mo · 300 min/mo | occasional notes |
| Otter Pro | $20/mo · 1,200 min/mo | regular meetings |
| Otter Business | $30/mo · 6,000 min/mo | teams |
| LessRec | $0.05/min · no subscription | everyone who hates subscriptions |
The break-even math
Otter Pro is $20/mo for 1,200 minutes. That's $0.0167/min — cheaper per minute than LessRec, if you actually use 1,200 minutes every month. Most people don't.
Here's the actual cost per use case:
| Monthly usage | Otter Pro | LessRec ($0.05/min) | You save with |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 min (1 hour) | $20 | $3 | LessRec — $17/mo |
| 240 min (4 hours) | $20 | $12 | LessRec — $8/mo |
| 400 min (the break-even) | $20 | $20 | tie |
| 800 min (heavy) | $20 | $40 | Otter — $20/mo |
| 1,500 min (very heavy) | $20 + overage | $75 | Otter |
The 400-minute rule: if you transcribe less than 400 minutes (about 6.5 hours) in a typical month, you save money with LessRec. That covers most podcasters with weekly episodes, journalists doing 4-6 interviews per month, and anyone who just needs occasional meeting notes.
What's the same
Both Otter and LessRec use OpenAI's Whisper model under the hood (Otter has its own fine-tunes; we run Whisper large-v3 INT8-quantized on dedicated CPUs). For everyday English, Russian, Spanish, and French audio you'll get nearly identical word-error rates — both around 5-8% on clean recordings.
Both produce timestamps, basic punctuation, and downloadable text outputs. Both support 100+ languages.
What's different
Speaker diarization
Otter has speaker labels (Speaker 1, Speaker 2…). LessRec currently doesn't — we're shipping diarization in the next 30 days. If "who said what" matters today (multi-host podcast, interview), Otter wins on this single feature.
Live recording
Otter records meetings live (Zoom, Meet, Teams) and transcribes in real time. LessRec is upload-only — you record elsewhere, then drop the file in. Different workflow, neither is "wrong" — just depends on whether you want a meeting bot or an upload tool.
Subscription vs pay-per-use
This is the core difference. Otter charges you the same $20 whether you transcribe one minute or 1,000. LessRec charges $0.05 per minute, period. Buy a $5 pack of 100 minutes once, use it over 6 months — fine. Don't pay anything next month if you don't use it.
File size limits
Otter Pro caps at 90-minute uploads. LessRec accepts files up to 1 GB (about 6 hours of MP3). If you record long-form (depositions, court recordings, full conferences, masterclasses), upload limits matter.
Free tier
Otter Free is generous: 300 min/mo. LessRec gives 10 free minutes, no signup required, just to let you check accuracy on your actual audio before paying anything. Different philosophies — Otter wants you in their app for free; we want you to verify the output and decide.
When to pick Otter
- You record live meetings constantly (Zoom/Meet/Teams)
- You need speaker labels today, not in 30 days
- You transcribe more than 6.5 hours per month consistently
- You want a SaaS app with sharing/team features built in
When to pick LessRec
- You transcribe less than 400 minutes most months and hate paying for unused minutes
- Your files are long (1-6 hours each)
- You record elsewhere and just need clean text out
- You want to verify accuracy before signing up for anything
- You'd rather buy minute-packs that don't expire than commit to a monthly fee

Is the accuracy the same as Otter?
Within ~1-2% on most audio. Both run Whisper-class models. For clean English audio, you won't notice a difference. For noisy audio with multiple speakers, both struggle — that's a Whisper limitation, not a service difference.
Can I export to Word/SRT/PDF?
LessRec exports to .txt, .docx, and .srt. PDF and rich-text are on the roadmap. Otter has more export formats today.
What about privacy?
We delete your uploaded audio and the resulting text after 7 days unless you explicitly download. Files never leave Hetzner Helsinki (EU GDPR). We don't train on your data, ever.
Is there a free trial?
10 minutes of transcription, no signup, no card. After that, the cheapest minute-pack is $5 = 100 minutes. Minutes never expire.
Can my whole team use one account?
Today: not really, LessRec is built around anonymous sessions. Team accounts ship in Q3 2026. Until then, share the credit URL via DM if you trust your teammate.
